Eyam

Plague village.

In 1665 the plague came to Eyam, brought in a bundle of clothing from London. To avoid spreading the disease into the surrounding population, the villagers quarantined themselves within the village boundaries. 260 of them died but because of their courageous decision, the disease was contained.

The village itself is quiet and unspoiled, well worth a visit. A tour round Eyam Hall is to be recommended and there is also a walk which takes in the main sites associated with the plague.
